Trager® Psychophysical Integration

The Dancing Cloud - Trager's Logo

The Trager Approach to body work uses gentle, yet deep, touch and movement to introduce relaxation and ease to the body, enabling the release of accumulated tension, pain and trauma that impair health and the body's natural mobility. This pain and tension may have developed in response to an accident, illnesses, or any kind of physical or emotional trauma, including the stresses of everyday life.

The purpose is to break up those patterns which inhibit, block and distort free flowing movements, and that cause pain and disruption of normal function on the affected areas, and the psycho-physical compensations that follow.

Trager's gentle techniques communicate the feeling of relaxed motion to all areas of the body and helps muscles and soft tissue to become "re-educated" to resume a healthier natural state of relaxation and freedom, while fostering expanded present moment awareness. As your body responds, the message is carried through the nervous system to the unconscious mind, which is where the Trager approach is ultimately directed.

"Every move, every thought, communicates how the tissue should feel when everything is right ... the mind is the whole thing.. for every physical, non-yielding condition there is a psychic counterpart in the unconscious mind, and it is exactly to the degree of (the) physical manifestation. The purpose of my work is to break up these patterns which inhibit free movement and cause pain and disruption of normal function..." - Milton Trager, MD.

A session lasts 60 to 90 minutes. No oils or lotions are used and you are dressed for your comfort with a minimum of shorts or briefs, and are additionally draped appropriately. The session takes place on a well-padded table in a warm, comfortable environment. I will gently and painlessly move your muscles, tissues and joints with rhythmic movements, joint rotations and easy stretches and compressions, imparting experiences of elongation, flexibility and resiliency to the skeleton, organs and soft tissue. These movements reverberate through your body, allowing you to sink into a very deep state of relaxation and to begin to experience a natural state of liquidity and elasticity. When tightness is encountered, I will work more lightly to help you recall the feeling of what it was like before it was tight. As each part of the body responds with greater freedom and ease, the sensation is pleasurable, relaxing and welcome.

Trager is profoundly relaxing, increasing physical mobility and optimal performance. Trager supports and expands self awareness of body, mind and spirit, and helps to create more efficient everyday movement. Trager complements physical therapy and psychotherapy and enhances voice, theatre, dance musical and athletic training. Trager is effective in relieving stress, tension, fatigue, poor posture, chronic pain, stiff joints, irritable bowel syndrome, sciatica, TMJ and is helpful for those with such neuromuscular diseases as MS. Parkinson's, dystonia, chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia.

This quality of effortless movement is maintained and reinforced by Mentastics® - simple, movements which I will give you to do on your own. They have the same intent as the table work in terms of releasing deep-seated patterns and reminding you to be in the present moment. For many people, Mentastics becomes a part of their life in taking care of themselves, and relieving themselves of stress and tension. Because many of the effects of The Trager Approach are cumulative, clients often appreciate and will benefit most from a series of sessions

Milton Trager, MD (1908-1997) explored the connection of mind and body through movement for 65 years. He spent his last 20 years teaching others how to access and communicate this "feeling" state to others. Trager Practitioners develop and constantly expand the feeling awareness in their own bodies and minds in order to be able to impart this state to their clients.

Certified Practitioners of The Trager Approach have successfully completed the certification program provided by The Trager Institute, and have maintained continuing education, and other requirements of The Trager Institute.
